Origin Of Shorin - Ryu Karate

Our style of Shorin - Ryu (Kobayashi Ryu) karate was founded in 1930 by Chibana Chosin (1885 - 1969).  Prior to naming his style of karate Shorin - Ryu, they were usually referred to by their village names such as Shuri Te, Naha Te or Tomari - Te. Chibana began his training at age 10 with his instructor, Itosu Anakoh who was popular for introducing karate in to the Okinawan public school system in the early 1900's. Chibana's karate training lasted for 71 years. In 1969 at the age of 85 Chibana Chosin received the Fourth Order of Merit from the Emperor for his contributions to the art of Karate.
